Taxonomy

Sphinx clotho Drury, 1773, Illust. nat. Hist. exot. Insects 2: index [91]. Type locality: [India, Tamil Nadu,] Madras [Chennai].
Geographical range

From Sri Lanka, India, Andaman Is , Nepal and Myanmar, east through China to Taiwan, South Korea and Japan, and then southeast through South East Asia as far as the Lesser Sunda Islands and Timor, Indonesia.
原名亜種はインド-マレーの広分布種で, 本州(紀伊半島以西), 四国, 九州, 対馬, 屋久島, 奄美大島に分布する. オーストラリア, ニューギニア方面のものは別亜種とされている.

Remark 前翅には翅項からの斜線と横脈点のほか, ほとんど斑紋がなく, 後翅の後角付近の淡黄褐色斑は, 個体により発達の程度が異なる.
Biology 幼虫は中国南部やインドではブドウ, ツタ類のほかアオイ科, ベゴニア, サトイモなどにつくという.
